The 60th anniversary of the Viv Richard’s birth is a reminder how his strut alone could turn bowlers to quivering wrecks, says Frank Keating, writing in the Guardian’s blog. Antigua’s cricketing knight celebrates with a round of golf on the island’s blissful Cedar Valley course while the cricketing world wishes happy returns to one of its most imperishable monarchs. ST JOHN”S: Former West Indies batsman and chairman of selectors Joey Carew died on Saturday at the age of 73, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) announced in a statement. Carew played 19 Tests for the West Indies and was the WICB’’s longest serving selector having served three stints starting in the 1970s. “The loss of Joey – who remained passionate about the game at all levels until the very end – is one which leaves West Indies cricket poorer,” said WICB chairman Julian Hunte. Carew opened the batting for the West Indies and made one Test century, against New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland in 1969. He was also a mentor of world record breaking batsman Brian Lara.

But the distressed West Indian supporter would also turn on the board and inquire about a developmental programme to nurture the likes of Pollard, not merely to enhance obvious natural ability but to give him the capacity to play vintage Test innings and…
