ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan today lambasted Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan in the National Assembly over the funds dished out to the bar councils and the chartered plane he has been accused of using. Chaudhry Nisar accused Law Minister for bribing the bar councils. Responding to the point raised by the Leader of the Opposition, the law minister said there is no misappropriation in funds distribution to the bars rather there is such a provision under law. He quoted the rules saying that the government shall provide grants and aid to the bar councils, adding that he handed over no money to any lawyer rather grants money goes to bar’’s account and is spent through resolution. Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza said, corruption will not go unattended and no corrupt will be spared. “I have myself taken note of corruption charges against a National Assembly official. I am waiting for the report of the Committee but assure that no corrupt will be spared,” she said, in response to a point raised by Chaudhry Nisar about corruption of one of the National Assembly officials. She said a House Committee headed by the Deputy Speaker and with representation of all political parties, after taking note of this incident has started action, the record has been sealed and the report is awaited. Nisar had stated that the action was still awaited against the official who has been alleged of massive corruption in an FIA inquiry conducted on recommendation of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). He had also objected the citation that the PAC is a recommendatory body and cannot direct. Responding to another point, Babar Awan assured the House that government would further strengthen the Public Accounts Committee that is not a recommendatory body rather it probes, orders and recovers the embezzled amounts. The Speaker, in response said, “PAC is powerful. Its being strong is essential and it enjoys support of all the members.” Fehmida said, she never interfered into working of the Committees and all the Committees enjoy her full support. Citing it as a recommendatory body was in light of a Supreme Court decision that Committees present reports to the House and the government takes action on those recommendations, she said. “In the case of PAC your and the Committee’’s work has been appreciable. Report of the Committee has been adopted by the House directing the government to take action,” she added. In response to another point of the Leader of the Opposition, the Speaker regretted the lifting of a child of a National Assembly employee and said, “it is not the right of any agency to lift anybody from their homes.” “It is going on over the years and can be one of the reasons for the circumstances faced by the country. I hope the Prime Minister will take notice of it,” she said, when the prime minister was present in the House. As far as abduction of the NA staffer’’s son, Babar Awan sought time to collect information about the victim family and abductee, and assured to report the House. Responding to controversy and cross allegations of corruption between Minister for Water and Power, Raja Pervez Ashraf and Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat, the Speaker said, criticism is right of the opposition and the government has the right to reply. She said Faisal Saleh Hayat was given thrice the time than what he had demanded. “There cannot be three Leaders of the Opposition. You had asked 30 to 35 minutes for speech but you spoke for two hours and the whole day of House proceedings was consumed contrary to the Business Advisory Committee decisions.”
