LAYYAH: The government of Punjab, declaring Layyah as calamity-hit, waived off agricultural taxes, abiyana (water tax) and maliya, Geo News reported Monday. A special Relief Fund worth Rs15 million has been set up for flood relief operation. Now, the flood is heading towards Muzaffargarh, DG Khan and Rajanpur, where special arrangements relating relief tents, helicopter service and boats, have been completed. According to Punjab’s Relief Commissioner Akhlaq Ahmed Tarar, the provincial government issued Rs10 million each for Mianwali, Layyah, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur for the relief activities there. The provincial government waived off the agricultural tax, abiyana (water tax) and maliya (Land Revenue tax) after declaring calamity status in all areas affected by the flash floods. The government communique said at least 80 trucks packed with edibles and other goods have been sent to the flood-ravaged areas; while, the relief goods would be dispatched to affectees in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir as well. A Flood Control Room has been set up at Civil Secretariat, Lahore headed by Punjab’s Chief Secretary, where 21 officers of grade 18 to 20 have been deputed for relief and rehabilitation work. The Punjab government said the flooding would impact at least seven districts from Attock to Rajanpur. The erosion by River Jhelum in Khushab’s Tetri village, has posed threat to the local residents. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif is today visiting the affected areas. He will inspect the relief activities and flood situation in the affected areas including Mianwali, Layyah and Jhang today. The members of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) Kamran Michael, Ajasam Sharif, Naveed Anjum and Chaudhry Allah Rakha left for Dera Ghazi Khan with relief goods worth Rs2.5 million. Also, Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan set up relief camps for the people hit by flash floods.
LAHORE: The government of Punjab announced to set up a special fund for the relief of the people affected by flood in the province, Geo News reported Sunday. Mianwali has been declared the calamity-hit area. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif presided over a meeting to review the losses caused by rains and floods and ongoing relief activities for the flood affectees in the province. The meeting decided that members of provincial cabinet, and MPAs and MNAs hailing from Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) would contribute one-month salary to the special Fund. The meeting decided that government employees of grade 17 and above will deposit two-day salary to the Fund; while, the employees of grade five to 16 would subscribe one-day salary. The Chief Secretary, senior member of Board of Revenue, DG Relief, Commissioner Lahore, Chief Engineer Bridges Railways, Chief Engineer Flood and representatives of Met Department attended the meeting.
LAHORE: Pakistan Army has been called in for meeting an eventuality on war footings arising out of flash flood and torrential rains in Mianwali, Sargodha, Khushab and Rajanpur districts besides forthwith evacuation of marooned and stranded affectees by army helicopters. Provincial Relief Commissioner, Akhlaq Ahmad Tarar said that on the special directive of the Chief Minister Punjab, the services of troops of Pakistan Army have been acquired for effectively carrying out rescue and relief operations in the affected areas. He said that entire relevant staff of different provincial departments including Divisional Commissioners and DCOs have been put on high alert to fully ensure the prompt relief to affectees. When contacted Inspector General of Police Punjab, Tariq Saleem Dogar said that all Regional and District Police Officers of the affected areas had already been directed to deploy armed police contingents in flood and rain affected areas for security and protection to the aggrieved people and ensure round the clock patrolling in and around the river embankments and riverine areas.
MIANWALI: Flood water entered into the power room of the Jinnah hydropower project and inundated large area after the authorities broke the embankment of Jinnah Barrage Geo News reported Friday. Local administration has declared emergency in the area. The Punjab government said the embankment was broken to save Mianwali city. According to the Met office, 1000000 cusecs of water was expected to pass through the barrage later in the day, which has the capacity of 950000 cusecs. 80000 cusecs of water passed through the barrage in 1976. 96 MW Jinnah hydropower project is located on right side of Jinnah Barrage, on Indus River about 5 km downstream of Kalabagh Town, 234 km from Islamabad. 163 Chinese engineers working on the project have been shifted to safe area.

ISLAMABAD: The widespread rains continued in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa during the last 24 hours have broken the record of last 50 years in the province. The current monsoon rain spell is likely to continue in most parts of the country till Friday afternoon including twin cities Sargodha, Mianwali, Chakwal and most parts of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa, said Chief Meteorologist, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Ghulam Rasool Thursday. He said that above normal rains have been recorded across the country during July. The Chief Met informed that intermittent rains starting from July 26 has filled Simly and Khanpur dams besides improving water level in Rawal dam which will help overcome water shortage. However, the people living in low lying areas in Rawalpindi may get affected due to urban flooding which is caused by improper sanitation system. About agriculture, Ghulam Rasool said the widespread rains will cast negative impact on cotton, chilli and tomato crops. The cotton diseases can harm the crop while excessive water in chilli and tomato fields will damage them as both are very sensitive crops. However, rice and sugarcane crop may survive if the rain water didnot stay long in the fields. Earlier this rainspell, the met office issued agriculture advisory for the farmers of Sukkur and Khairpur districts of Sindh to protect date crop. While, he said sometimes farmers do not follow the advisory and have to bear big losses. Ghulam Rasool said that the rapid climate change is being observed across the globe and it is a very difficult task to give seasonal forecast and precise prediction about weather. “There is need to follow innovations in climate change science as all the weather experts across the world are facing challenges to give accurate seasonal prediction,” he said. He said that extreme weather changes are being observed in the country as heat wave conditions prevailing in the months of March broke all the records and now the monsoon rains has caused floods in different parts of the country affecting people and agriculture sector. Giving details, he said that the El-nino phenomenon has been suppressed and now the weather system in neutral. However, La-nina phenomenon” development is not observed in the Pacific Ocean. The rainfall in twin cities during 26-29 July,was recorded as 64 mm in Islamabad and 159 mm in Rawalpindi.
LAHORE: Dozens people, including many kids, have been killed in separate rain-inflicted incidents, as downpour continued to wreak havoc in various parts of the country on Thursday, Geo news reported. The incessant spree of monsoon rains is continued in most party of country including Punjab and Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa provinces while the spate is heading to hit Sindh sometime later on the day. The most rain, 179mm within last 24 hours, was recorded in Mianwali while met office forecast more showers all across country in days to come. In Lahore only, 10 persons were reported lost their lives in rain-related incidents in. A kid was electrocuted in Chongi Amar Sadhu, Lahore, while a man died after the roof of his house collapsed in Manawan area in the outskirts of the Punjab capital, police sources said. According to Rescue 1122 and hospital sources, Muhammed Tufail (60) died and his son Muhammed Ayub 35 sustained injuries as the building of their house at Kot Kamboh, Munawan collapsed due to heavy rain. Another incident occurred in front of Data Darbar gate No 1 where a man Imran s/o Mehboob was electrocuted by touching an electricity pole. Another building collapsed near Timber Market, Ravi Road where seven persons of a family including Safdar, 35, his wife Nasira, 25, and their five children were seriously injured. Nine persons were injured after an old building near Jain Mander, Lytton Road, collapsed early in the morning and all were came under the debris. Low lying areas and even some posh localities came under knee-deep rain water in different parts of Lahore and people faced lot of hardships doing daily chores. Attendance remained thin in the offices while shortage of public transport left many in the lurch. A man died after the roof of his house collapsed in Gujranwala. Fatima Bibi died while her daughter Zeenat, 3, was injured when the roof of her house collapsed. Three people, including Akbar and Zeeshan, were injured when the roof of their house caved in on Noshera Road. Yasin was electrocuted at Farid Town. A man also died of electrocution in Phularwan area in Sargodha. Overnight string of the torrential rains has left low-lying areas submerged in Sargodha. Six persons have reportedly been wounded due to collapse of walls in Katchi Abadis. Another person electrified to death in Sargodha after receiving power shocks. A person died due to roof collapse in Faisalabad. The stormy downpours intermittently also continued since last night in Dera Ismail Khan and the adjoining areas. At least three children and a woman were killed as their house caved in Aba Shaheed. In the federal capital, the two-day downpour has helped increased water level in Simly Dam and the CDA is expecting that good monsoon rains would help overcome water scarcity. The municipal authorities have set up special relief cells to deal with emergency situations in case of heavy rains. The authorities will closely watch Nullah Leh in Rawalpindi. Two kids died in rain related incidents in Murree, police sources said; one among them was playing outside his home when he was swept away by rainwater, while another was electrocuted. Rain spell also lashed Azad Kashmir and Muzzafarabad. Meanwhile, at least four persons of a same family including mother and her three kids were killed when roof of their house collapsed in Mandi Bahauddin. About 50 people were injured when the roof of a house collapsed at Mauza Badshahpur on Wednesday. The Rasm-e-Qul of the wife of Khushi Muhammad was going on when the roof caved in. As a result, 50 people, including women, were injured. A 12-year-old girl died when the roof of her collapsed at Dhillam village, Daska. A 12-year-old boy was electrocuted at Mohallah Mianpura in Sialkot. Naeem was passing through the rainwater when he accidentally touched an electricity pole. As many as 70 houses collapsed in Bannu alone. Gori Police Station SHO Sabaq Khan told APP that last night heavy rain has suddenly raised the water level in Kachkot rainy canal as result of which 60 houses in the low-laying area were washed away by the gushing water. Meanwhile, the local administration has proclaimed an emergency in district Gujrat amid fears of flood. In Sindh and Balochistan, hot and humid weather is expected in most parts of the provinces. However, isolated light rain may occur in lower Sindh and northeast Balochistan during next two days. Heavy rainfalls were predicted for Sialkot, Gujranwala, Sargodha and Lahore division during next 24 hours may cause low level flood in the catchment areas. According to Met office, 98 mm rain was recorded at Lahore Airport, 60 mm in Faisalabad, 50 mm in Bhakkar, 93 mm in Noorpur Thal, 37 mm in Sargodha, 23 mm in Jhang, 113 mm in Bannu, 85 mm inGari Dopatta, 71 mm in Peshawar, 64 mm in Muzaffarabad, 28 mm in Islamabad and 7 mm in Rawalpindi. Meanwhile, the meteorological Office has forecast widespread thunderstorm and downpour during next 24-36 hours in different parts of the country as southwest monsoon current from Arabian sea is penetrating in sub-mountain areas of Punjab and Kashmir.

Five people were killed in rain-related incidents in Lahore, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib. Heavy showers lashed different areas of Punjab on Tuesday morning. However, water accumulation in low-lying areas disturbed routine life. Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif visited rain-affected areas of Lahore and reviews rescue operation. Three persons including two children electrocuted in Shahidra and Taj Park areas whereas two dead in Sheikupura and Nankana Sahib. Met office predicted more rains in next 48 hours. Rain recorded in Lahore 62 mm, Gujaranwala 86 mm, Mianwali 80 mm, Sialkot 69 mm and Chakwal 25 mm.
