Water outflow from Attabad Lake touches 10084 cusecs

HUNZA: The water outflow from Attabad Lake through spillway has reached 10084 cusecs following the removal of large rocks hindering the flow of water. Three large rocks sitting on separate spots on the course of spillway were blasted away with the help of explosives, clearing the way for water to flow freely. Meanwhile, a total of two hotels and six houses in Gulmat and another two houses in Shah Kat places have been submerged under water owing to rise in water level at lake. Heli service is still underway as part of relief and rescue efforts for effectees in low-lying areas, witnessed confirmed.

Blasting to widen spillway at Attabad Lake underway

HUNZA: The process of blasting three giant stones, aiming at widening spillway at Attabad Lake, has been kicked off early on Tuesday morning, Geo news reported. The water outflow through Attabad spillway is being witnessed at nearly 9500 cusecs after the process of blasting got underway this morning, lake administration said. Fierce land sliding from big mountains situated along Attabad lake also continues for sometimes, whereas, experts predicted that water outgoing from lake will remain on rise if every thing works as planned. Meanwhile, a total of two hotels and six houses in Gulmat and another two houses in Shah Kat places have been submerged under water owing to rise in water level at lake. Heli service is still underway as part of relief and rescue efforts for effectes in low-lying areas, witnessed confirmed to media.

Water level in Attabad Lake on rise

HUNZA: The water inflow in Attabad Lake has yet again surpassed outflow, rendering the water accumulation in lake on rise, which has resulted in submerging low-lying areas located in upper Hunza, Geo news reported Sunday. According to official sources, the water outgoing from spillway is 7500 cusecs but the level is still on rise owing to its incoming from various corners due to quick melting of snow glaciers. Big stones have slipped out from spillway thus witnessing an increase in water outflow, witnesses said. Meanwhile, relief and rescue activities for affectees are underway in Gilgit and Hunza areas under clean and hot conditions.

Water discharge increases at Attabad, spillway breakage fears

HUNZA: The water outflow from Hunza Lake has reached to 1400 cusecs creating fears of breakage of spillway during next 24 hours. According to official sources, the seepage from the spillway has been reached to 1400 cusecs and the water level in the lake has been soared to 8.5 feet since May 29. Next 24 hours are crucial as spillway boundaries are more like to be destroyed due to immense water pressure, they added. Home department of Gilgit Baltistan announced that Gilgit-Hunza section of Karakoram Highway will remain open for traffic till 4:00 pm today. Helicopter service is also operating in the affected areas to evacuate people and drop relief goods.

Hunza lake spillway to begin by midnight

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo Friday said that water outflow through spillway will begin at Hunza Lake by midnight. Speaking in Islamabad, the Minister appealed to the residents of low lying areas to shift to the camps. He said wheat has been stored in Gojal for 25000 IDPs for two months and that assessment of damage will carried out for determining compensation for the businessmen affected by the incident after improvement in the overall situation and restoration of Karakorum Highway. Manzoor Wattoo said the people of upper areas have not been affected and they continue to do business with China.

Ataabad lake water likely to enter spillway today

HUNZA: The distance between Ataabad lake water and spillway is down to less than four feet, Geo has reported from Hunza. Amid possibility of water outflow, Hunza authorities have closed Gilgit-Hunza section of Karkoram Highway for traffic. In addition, an IDP camp, which comprises of 400 tents, has being shifted to Special Education Complex after being declared dangerous. Hunza Nagar Deputy Commissioner Zafar Waqar Taj said that people have been advised to stay at high areas away from the river. Although a number of helicopters are already taking part in the rescue operation. However, in the wake of possible outflow of water, more helicopters will be used. The Hunza DC said that next 36 hours are very important in this regard. He hoped that the arrangements being made during the last four months to prevent human losses would bear fruits. Taj further said the current level in Ataabad Lake is 360 feet and its level is increasing by one inch after every hour.
