The Surfer: Time for New Zealand to blood young talent

Writing in the Dominion Post, Simon Doull says New Zealand must use the home series against Zimbabwe to test new talent. He believes Auckland spinner Roneel Hira, Wellington batsman Michael Pollard and Northern Districts opener Brad Wilson deserve a go. Of course, to suggest that the selectors use this Zimbabwean series as the chance to pick a handful of untested players and see whether they’re up to the task would be foolish. The Black Caps can’t afford to be chopping and changing their line-up all the time. What I’m suggesting,…

The Surfer: Experience is a double-edged sword

As players get older, they understand the game more but they also know more about what can go wrong, Greg Chappell explains in the Hindu. He writes about how he he spoke to Sachin Tendulkar during his time as India coach about trying to think like a young player, who is only enthusiastic about scoring runs and is not worried about making a mistake. The Surfer: Pakistan’s other form of cricket

Emmad Hameed traces the history of tape ball cricket in Pakistan in Dawn. The tape ball is harder than the tennis ball, swings more, and flies faster off the bat he explains. The transition from tennis to tape tennis ball came around the time the Kerry Packer revolution hit international cricket, the introduction of white balls, coloured clothing, black sight screens and floodlit cricket brought a new dimension and thrill. While closer to home, tape ball generated a new interest in players and fans alike….
