Rasheed challenges Elahi to face in polls

LAHORE: A leader of Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), also a Senator Chaudhry Pervez Rasheed Friday challenged PML-Q’s Chaudhry Pervez Elahi to contest in election against him, Geo news reported. Later, he told media Pervez Elahi has not replied to my challenge. In a statement released from Lahore, Senator said he was ready to face Elahi in any constituency including Gujrat. It is evident from the results of Gujrat by-polls that Elahi’s allegations were baseless as N-League’s contender won Gujrat by-polls while media’s live coverage proved that there was no rigging at all.

President advises people to partake in Earth Hour

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has called upon the people to observe the Earth Hour on Saturday along with the international community by voluntarily switching off extra lights for one hour between 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. He also urged people to optimally utilize essential commodities like energy for the greatest good of greatest number of people. In a message on the occasion, he said, “The Earth Hour 2010 is being observed for the first time throughout the world on Saturday, 27th March, 2010 between 8:30pm to 9:30pm to impress upon the need to save energy and preserve environment for a better future.” He expressed pleasure that the Ministry of Environment has also decided to join the international community in observing Earth Hour at the appointed time. “Conservation of natural resources and essential commodities is critical to creating a sustainable environment. It is important that we conserve and use wisely essential commodities like energy particularly electricity so as to make it available for other worthwhile uses,” he added.

‘Early presentation of Constitutional Package sparked tension’

Twin blasts claim 42 in Iraq

BAGHDAD: Security and medical officials say twin bombings in the Iraqi city of Khales, northeast of Baghdad, have killed 42 people and wounded 65 others. Among the dead and wounded were an unknown number of women and children, said Ahmed Alwan, a doctor at the main hospital in Diyala province’’s capital of Baquba, close to Khales. A security official from Baquba Operations Command, on condition of anonymity, confirmed that 42 people were killed and 65 wounded, making an overall casualty toll of more than 100. It comes as the first election results are released for Iraq’’s national elections, showing the main opposition contender, Iyad Allawi, has won the most number of seats.

US military judge refuses to throw out Iraqi killings case

CAMP PENDLETON: A US military judge Friday threw out a bid to dismiss charges against a former squadron leader accused of a role in the 2005 killings of 24 Iraqi civilians. Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich is the last Marine still charged in the case as prosecutors have struggled to make the allegations stick. So far the other seven accused were either acquitted or had charges withdrawn before court martial. But judge Lieutentant Colonel David Jones said Friday the “motion to dismiss charges against the former aquad leader Sgt. Frank Wuterich is denied. “There was no improper influence flowing upwards or downwards,” the judge added. Wuterich faces multiple charges of voluntary manslaughter for his role in the deaths, which occurred after a deadly roadside bombing that claimed the life of a Marine in Haditha, 260 kilometers (140 miles) west of Baghdad, in 2005. Many of the victims were unarmed men, women and children.

Twin blasts kill 20 in Iraq

BAQUBA: Twenty people were killed and 55 wounded on Friday in twin blasts in the town of Khales, in Diyala province north of the Iraqi capital, a security official said. Among the wounded were women and children, said the official from Baquba Operations Command, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Some of the wounded were transported to a hospital in the provincial capital of Baquba, the official added. The blasts struck at around 6:15 pm (1515 GMT) in front of a cafe and a restaurant in central Khales, around 65 kilometres (40 miles) northeast of Baghdad and near Diyala’’s provincial capital of Baquba. The explosions came shortly before Iraq’’s national election commission was due to announce full results from the country’’s hotly-contested March 7 parliamentary election. Violence has dropped dramatically across Iraq since its peak in 2006 and 2007, but attacks remain common, especially in Baghdad and the restive northern city of Mosul.

Police constable held by rangers released

LAHORE: Police constable Khalil, who was abducted by the rangers, was brought before media here on Friday. SSP Model Town Rana Hayat told media that Rangers Officials gave the custody of Khalil to police in the Cantonment area. On this occasion, SSP Model Town said that the police was yet to receive his (Khalil) official uniform. To a question, he said the press release issued by the Punjab Government was the stance of provincial government. The SSP said that statements of Constable Khalil and other concerned people would be made public soon.

US-Russia treaty to help global non-proliferation: Obama

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama on Friday said a newly agreed arms treaty between Russia and the United States would strengthen the global effort to halt the spread of nuclear weapons. “With this agreement, the United States and Russia — the two largest nuclear powers in the world — also send a clear signal that we intend to lead,” said Obama. “By upholding our own commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, we strengthen our global efforts to stop the spread of these weapons, and to ensure that other nations meet their own responsibilities.
