Beyond the Test World: Tanzania stun Kenya in Africa Cup

Tanzania women upset the formbook to go top of the Africa Cup by beating arch-rivals Kenya by nine runs at the Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala. Tanzania won the toss, chose to bat and stayed on top of their opponents for much of the game. Opener Monica Pascal piled on 56 as Kenya looked ordinary in the field, and was ably assisted in the middle of the innings by Mwanaiddi Ibrahim, Hadija Hassan and Hawa Salum as they made 109 runs after 20 overs. In reply, Kenya slumped to 17…

The Surfer: England’s blooming Flower

The England team is in the middle of a rare two-month break from the international scene ahead of a hectic two years of action that begins in the UAE against Pakistan from January. Andy Flower, their team director, needed the break as much as anyone but is so focussed on his role that he is always planning for the next challenge. He is also happy to put something back into the game and Paul Newman, of the Daily Mail, caught up with Flower during a coaching clinic in London for…

The Surfer: A whole different ball game in India

In its intensity, its passion and its sheer scale, cricket in India is unsurpassed by any sport I’ve covered, writes Andy Bull in the Guardian. In the departures lounge at Nagpur airport last Sunday I stumbled into a thick, swirling crowd of men with their mobile phones out, filming and snapping pictures, as well as brandishing pens and pieces of scrap paper. In the middle of this throng, I found once I had fought my way through it, were Simon Doull and Pommie Mbangwa….

Israel says he hopes Kadhafi will fall

WASHINGTON: Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak voiced hope Wednesday that Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi would fall, and said Israel must be strong as turbulent change opens a “new chapter” in the Middle East. “We are living in a tough neighborhood where there’’s no mercy for the weak, no second opportunity for those who cannot protect themselves,” Barak told media. “The whole area is moving into a new chapter. Hopefully it will be better. We have to have strengths to protect ourselves while trying to find ways and openings for the political process and peace.” Asked if he was happy to see Libyan strongman Kadhafi increasingly isolated and losing his 41-year grip on power, Barak admitted: “I hope he will go down.” The Israeli defense minister, though, had some kind words for ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, a key US ally in the Arab world who forged a landmark 1979 peace treaty with the Jewish state. “I felt that the last page of an important chapter in the story of modern Egypt had ended, and a new one just started,” Barak said of the popular uprising earlier this month that forced Mubarak to relinquish power. “I feel personally a lot of respect and sort of empathy to Mubarak. He was an important leader for his country,” he said. “I believe he enjoyed the respect of many Egyptians. It’’s a huge challenge to hold Egypt just above the water. And he did it for very long time. Quite successfully under the circumstances.” Mubarak “was extremely committed to peace with us,” Barak said. “I think that he deserves respect, and his dignity probably should be kept.” (AFP)

Britain’’s Cameron first leader to visit new Egypt

CAIRO: British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday became the first foreign leader to visit Egypt since the downfall of Hosni Mubarak which electrified the Middle East and forced the West to rethink its policies in the region. Cameron’’s arrival came hot on the heels of a visit by William J. Burns, U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, who started a visit to Egypt in which he will meet with the army-led interim government as well as political groups. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is due to arrive in Egypt on Tuesday to discuss the post-Mubarak era in which the army is running the country while setting up free elections to deliver civilian rule and democracy. Uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia have spread like wildfire in the Arab world, threatening entrenched dynasties from Libya to Bahrain. The West has watched with alarm as long-time allies and foes came under threat, urging reform and restraint. A British official traveling with Cameron said he would meet members of the former opposition to Mubarak but not the Brotherhood, which is Egypt’’s most organized political grouping and regarded with suspicion in the West.(Reuters)
