Sachin Tendulkar’s greatest contribution to the self-image of the diasporic Indian is to enable the construction of a new narrative of self-description, writes Samir Chopra in Outlook. A sportsman described as the Michael Jordan of his sport sticks an arrow into the Indian quiver that has been missing thus far. True world-dominating sporting power in the new liberalised era is foreign to Indians; to trade in the currency of its attainment, to speak of an Indian at the top of the heap in a game, to speak of the physical…

SYDNEY: Batsman Usman Khawaja and spinner Michael Beer will make their debuts for Australia in the final Ashes Test against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground, captain Michael Clarke said on Sunday. Pakistan-born Khawaja will become the first Muslim to play Test cricket for his adopted country, while Beer will get his debut after playing just seven first-class matches for Western Australia. Khawaja will step into the demanding number three batting position, up to now occupied by Ponting. Michael Clarke, standing in as captain for the injured Ricky Ponting, said selectors had chosen to use the left-arm spin of Beer while making fast bowler Doug Bollinger the 12th man for the fifth Test, starting on Monday. Australia: Michael Clarke (captain), Brad Haddin (vice-captain), Shane Watson, Phillip Hughes, Usman Khawaja, Mike Hussey, Steven Smith, Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus, Michael Beer. Doug Bollinger (12th man).

“When I was the England captain, there were periods I felt Andrew Flintoff was draining me, as I was spending so much time managing him,” writes Michael Vaughan in the Telegraph. “But when you retire, you look back on your career and I’ve realised I would not be doing what I am doing now, or have the reputation I have, without Freddie Flintoff.” I made things very simple. I used to tell him to watch the ball and hit it so he would be entertaining the crowd and entertaining me…

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: England captain Paul Collingwood won the toss and elected to field against Australia in the World Twenty20 final at the Kensington Oval here on Sunday. Both sides are unchanged from their respective semi-final wins in St Lucia, where England beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets on Thursday and Australia defeated defending champions Pakistan by three wickets, in a thrilling match that went to the penultimate ball, on Friday. This is a first World Twenty20 final for both Australia, unbeaten at the tournament so far, and England. But whereas Australia have won four World Cups, the latest on this ground three years ago, and a Champions Trophy, England have never triumphed in the final of a major international one-day tournament. Teams Australia: David Warner, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke (captain), David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Cameron White, Brad Haddin (wk), Steven Smith, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Tait, Dirk Nannes. England: Michael Lumb, Craig Kieswetter (wk), Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood (capt), Eoin Morgan, Luke Wright, Tim Bresnan, Michael Yardy, Graeme Swann, Stuart Broad, Ryan Sidebottom Umpires: Aleem Dar (PAK) and Billy Doctrove (WI), TV umpire: Billy Bowden (NZ) Match referee: Ranjan Madugalle (SL).
