Attabad lake rises; notices issued for more evacuation

HUNZA: The landslide-pushed lake in Attabad continued to pose threat to the lives of people in Hunza, as the water level at the Lake rose by six inches in the last 48 hours with decreased inflow and outflow from the spillway, Geo News reported Sunday. According to the government sources, the inflow at the lake is 5400 cusecs at Phassu; while, the discharge from the spillway is 5100 cusecs. The government sources said the lake water is making cuts near the Spillway; however, it is at slowed pace. Meantime, notices have been issued for the evacuation of five houses situated near the Lake in Gulmit and Shashkat. The weather is pleasant in Attabad and Hunza; accordingly, the helicopter service for the evacuation of the affected people to safer places would continue. Meanwhile, the experts said spillway breakdown is no way imminent in near future.

Water inflow matches outflow at Attabad lake

HUNZA: Water inflow and outflow continues at a matching speed at Attabad lake as goods and affectees are being moved through helicopter and boat services. According to official sources, water is flowing at 5000 cusecs into the landslide- formed Attabad lake while outflow also continues at the matching rate. It is being feared that 15000 to 20000 cusecs water from melting glaciers will make its way into the lake in July. Earlier, this water used to flow into the Hunza River. Helicopter service continues in Hunza and Gilgit following improvement in weather conditions. Now the affectees of Tehsil Gojal are being shifted to their areas. Boat service is ferrying people in the upper areas of Hunza while Gilgit-Hunza section of Karakorum Highway remained opened till 4 pm today for transporting relief goods to the calamity-stricken people.

Water spill increases from Hunza Lake

HUNZA: The water discharge from Attabad Lake has been increased, however, Gilgit-Hunza section of Karakoram Highway remained open till 4:00 pm today. Water outflow from Attaabad Lake spillway has been increased from 150 cusec to 250 cusec. The water level in the lake is continuously increasing and ten more houses in tehsil headquarter Gulmat and three in Shahskat have been inundated. Meanwhile, weather is clear in Gilgit and Hunza and helicopter service for evacuation of affectees is underway.

Samsam rules out any strife b/w govt, judiciary

OKARA: State Minister for Information Samsam Bukhari Sunday rubbished the impression of having any conflict between the government and judiciary, saying there was no dispute in the past nor will there be in future. Addressing a press conference here, he said Pakistan Muslim League-N Chief Nawaz Sharif still meets with Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and the former can also call on President Asif Ali Zardari whenever he wishes to do so. He said the government will leave no stone unturned for extending help to the Hunza affectees. Samsam Bukhari said Pakistan’s nuclear programme warrants country’s integrity.

Ataabad lake water likely to enter spillway today

HUNZA: The distance between Ataabad lake water and spillway is down to less than four feet, Geo has reported from Hunza. Amid possibility of water outflow, Hunza authorities have closed Gilgit-Hunza section of Karkoram Highway for traffic. In addition, an IDP camp, which comprises of 400 tents, has being shifted to Special Education Complex after being declared dangerous. Hunza Nagar Deputy Commissioner Zafar Waqar Taj said that people have been advised to stay at high areas away from the river. Although a number of helicopters are already taking part in the rescue operation. However, in the wake of possible outflow of water, more helicopters will be used. The Hunza DC said that next 36 hours are very important in this regard. He hoped that the arrangements being made during the last four months to prevent human losses would bear fruits. Taj further said the current level in Ataabad Lake is 360 feet and its level is increasing by one inch after every hour.

Copter service on hold amid bad weather

HUNZA: The gap between the spillway and the lake level has reduced to four feet whereas Gilgit-Hunza section of Karkoram Highway will be closed for traffic from 6:00 pm today due to possible outflow of water, Geo News reported Thursday. Helicopter rescue service has been affected due to bad weather conditions. Deputy Commissioner Hunza-Nagar Zafar Waqar Taj said the distance between lake and spillway is only four feet and people have directed to reach at higher places. Emergency has been imposed in Gilgit and Hunza and vacations of organizations related to NDMA have been canceled. Helicopter service started for Hunza affectees has also suspended due to bad weather, he added.

Part of Karakoram Road to be closed at 6pm today

HUNZA: The portion of Karakoram Highway that lies between Hunza and Gilgit, would be blocked from 6pm today, Geo News quoted DC Hunza as saying Thursday.

GILGIT: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif has urged that the problems being faced by affected people of Hunza should be addressed on the priority basis.
