ISLAMABAD: The widespread rains continued in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa during the last 24 hours have broken the record of last 50 years in the province. The current monsoon rain spell is likely to continue in most parts of the country till Friday afternoon including twin cities Sargodha, Mianwali, Chakwal and most parts of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa, said Chief Meteorologist, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Ghulam Rasool Thursday. He said that above normal rains have been recorded across the country during July. The Chief Met informed that intermittent rains starting from July 26 has filled Simly and Khanpur dams besides improving water level in Rawal dam which will help overcome water shortage. However, the people living in low lying areas in Rawalpindi may get affected due to urban flooding which is caused by improper sanitation system. About agriculture, Ghulam Rasool said the widespread rains will cast negative impact on cotton, chilli and tomato crops. The cotton diseases can harm the crop while excessive water in chilli and tomato fields will damage them as both are very sensitive crops. However, rice and sugarcane crop may survive if the rain water didnot stay long in the fields. Earlier this rainspell, the met office issued agriculture advisory for the farmers of Sukkur and Khairpur districts of Sindh to protect date crop. While, he said sometimes farmers do not follow the advisory and have to bear big losses. Ghulam Rasool said that the rapid climate change is being observed across the globe and it is a very difficult task to give seasonal forecast and precise prediction about weather. “There is need to follow innovations in climate change science as all the weather experts across the world are facing challenges to give accurate seasonal prediction,” he said. He said that extreme weather changes are being observed in the country as heat wave conditions prevailing in the months of March broke all the records and now the monsoon rains has caused floods in different parts of the country affecting people and agriculture sector. Giving details, he said that the El-nino phenomenon has been suppressed and now the weather system in neutral. However, La-nina phenomenon” development is not observed in the Pacific Ocean. The rainfall in twin cities during 26-29 July,was recorded as 64 mm in Islamabad and 159 mm in Rawalpindi.

Director Met office Mian Ajmal Shad said a new system is approching the country from east. “It is likely to enter on July 21 and cause rain in north Punjab, Gilgit Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir. LAHORE: Pakistan cricket team captain, Shahid Afridi has said he has made it clear to Shoaib Akhtar and Shahid Afidi that he will not tolerate any attempt to spoil to the atmosphere of the dressing room while coach Waqar Younis said the players were kept away from media to avert disputes. At a press conference in Gadafi Stadium here, Waqar Younis had to face some tough questions but he replied to them in a calm and composed manner. He said the players are responsible for when they come and what they do but as far as their accommodation is concerned the board it is the board’s responsibility. “What the players do at night is certainly not my responsibility,” he asserted. Waqar Younis said the damage caused to the team over the past two-three months is much more compared to what the team lost during the last 20 years. Shahid Afridi also answered to the piercing questions in a confident manner. He also appeared unhappy with the role of the media. He reiterated that he would not tolerate any attempt aimed at spoiling the atmosphere of the dressing room. “I have made it clear to Shoaib Akhter that the atmosphere of the dressing room is no longer they way it used to be,” he said. Waqar Younis said Younis and Shoaib are big players but he sees the new players as the beacon of Pakistan’s future.
HUNZA: The distance between Ataabad lake water and spillway is down to less than four feet, Geo has reported from Hunza. Amid possibility of water outflow, Hunza authorities have closed Gilgit-Hunza section of Karkoram Highway for traffic. In addition, an IDP camp, which comprises of 400 tents, has being shifted to Special Education Complex after being declared dangerous. Hunza Nagar Deputy Commissioner Zafar Waqar Taj said that people have been advised to stay at high areas away from the river. Although a number of helicopters are already taking part in the rescue operation. However, in the wake of possible outflow of water, more helicopters will be used. The Hunza DC said that next 36 hours are very important in this regard. He hoped that the arrangements being made during the last four months to prevent human losses would bear fruits. Taj further said the current level in Ataabad Lake is 360 feet and its level is increasing by one inch after every hour.
