WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama reached out to several foreign leaders about the unrest in Egypt, as Washington stepped up a diplomatic effort for a quick transition of power in Cairo. Obama underscored the need for “an orderly, peaceful transition, beginning now,” the White House said in a statement on Saturday as a 12-day protest for an end to President Hosni Mubarak’’s 30-year-rule showed no sign of abating. The US leader spoke to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates, Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, the statement said. The comments came as the United States distanced itself from a one-time envoy’’s suggestion that Mubarak should remain in office during a transition. Frank Wisner, an influential retired diplomat and former US ambassador to Egypt who met with Mubarak at Obama’’s request this week, “was speaking for himself and not for the US government,” a senior Obama administration official said in Washington. Wisner called Mubarak an “old friend” of the United States, and said he “must stay in office in order to steer those changes through.” According to newspaper, Obama administration officials said that in a series of phone calls and e-mails from the White House, the State Department and the Pentagon, they have urged the creation of a “council of elders” in Egypt to begin drafting revisions to the constitution. These messages also encouraged newly appointed Vice President Omar Suleiman to jump-start talks with an array of opposition leaders, including the Muslim Brotherhood, the newspaper said. Obama meanwhile “discussed his serious concern about the targeting of journalists and human rights groups, and reaffirmed that the government of Egypt has a responsibility to protect the rights of its people and to release immediately those who have been unjustly detained,” the White House added. He also “emphasized the importance of an orderly, peaceful transition, beginning now, to a government that is responsive to the aspirations of the Egyptian people, including credible, inclusive negotiations between the government and the opposition.” The leaders agreed to stay in close contact going forward, the White House said.

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira on Saturday expressed surprise on the recent statement of PML-N leader Mian Nawaz Sharif in which he claimed that the Federal Government had wanted to implicate him and his younger brother in the assassination case of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer while Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani came to their rescue. “The statement is really puzzling”, said Kaira. He said that according to Article 90 of the Constitution as amended through the 18th Amendment, the Prime Minister and ministers together constitute the Federal Government and if Gilani “rescued” the Sharifs, then it means the Federal Government rescued them. “This government is led by Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, it is surprising, therefore, to dangerously allege that the government is doing one thing while the Premier is doing another”, he added. Kaira said that the PPP-led government did not believe in victimization of its opponents. He said that there was no political prisoner in the country today and the credit for this went to the reconciliatory politics of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, President Asif Ali Zardri and Prime Minister Gilani. “The PPP believes in politics of peaceful co-existence and across the board reconciliation. The government is taking along people and political parties of all shades and opinion”, he added. He urged Nawaz Sharif to avoid issuing such statements in future. The minister said that Governor Taseer was a political personality and holding a political office and was killed on political basis. However, the PPP government has neither accused nor implicated the executive head of the Punjab Government on his “shahadat”, he added. Kaira said that the matter was in the court of law now and everybody should facilitate the legal process in order to punish the culprit in accordance with the law of the land.

LAHORE: Former Senator and Attorney General of Pakistan, Sardar Muhammad Latif Khan Khosa took oath today as Governor Punjab. Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice, Justice Aijaz Chaudhry administered oath to Sardar Latif Khosa in an imposing ceremony here at Governor House. Leading stalwarts from the Pakistan People’s Party, office bearers of People’s Lawyers Forum and other important personalities attended the oath-taking ceremony. It should be mentioned here that Khosa was scheduled to take oath on Wednesday but the ceremony was postponed owing to the murder of Justice Javed Iqbal’s parents. Khosa was appointed as the Governor of Punjab by President Asif Ali Zardari on 11th January. An important point to note here is that his appointment was challenged in the Lahore High Court the next day when a citizen filed a petition against him. It said that he was not eligible for the post under the articles 62 and 63 of the constitution because he was removed from the office of Attorney General in 2009 under charges of corruption. The court adjourned the hearing till January 19. Latif Khosa took the post of Salmaan Taseer, who was murdered by his own bodyguard last week for giving out statements against the blasphemy law. Khosa is the 27th Governor of the Punjab and is considered to be a close ally of President Asif Ali Zardari.

KARACHI: Pakistan People’’s Party (PPP) Punjab President Imtiaz Safdar Warriach said he was not satisfied with the investigations being carried out into the killing of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, as Punjab government was responsible for his security; however, the security was overlooked. Talking to media after visiting Taseer’s grave at Cavalry Ground, he said Taseer’s assassination was politically motivated; but, it was being taken to some other dimension, adding his killing is a conspiracy against Pakistan. A message has been given to democratic forces through this murder that they should back up only a peculiar approach, leaving aside the constitution and law, he stressed. Imtiaz also questioned as to how Malik Mumtaz Qadri came on duty again after he had been expelled for being security threat.
