NY Pakistan Day Parade arrangements complete

NEW YORK: Pakistan Independence Day is being celebrated in the US today on August 1st and all the arrangements have been finalized for the purpose, Geo News reported Sunday. Pakistan Day Parade will set out from 38st Street at Madison Avenue at around 1pm local time. Earlier, the participants will be served with breakfast arrayed with Pakistan’s cultural dishes. A musical concert has also been made arranged on the occasion with special items to entertain kids and ladies.

Shahbaz announces compensation for flood affectees

RAWALPINDI: Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Mian Shehbaz Sharif said that due to effective strategy adopted by Punjab government as well city district government Allah Almighty had saved Rawalpindi from the devastation of Nullah Leh flooding. The chief minister visited flood hit Gawalmandi areas here and reviewed the situation. He spent some moments on Gawalmandi Bridge and left for Islamabad without talking to media. He announced reconstruction of Dhoke Hassu Bridge which was damaged by flash flood. Punjab Chief Minister of Mian Shahbaz Sharif also announced Rs 300,000 for four persons who were killed due to flash flooding while the injured would be paid Rs 100,000 as compensation. On the occasion, PML-N city leadership briefed Mian Shahbaz Sharif about the situation caused by Nullah Leh flood. On this he expressed his satisfaction over the arrangements made by city district government to tackle the flood. He said that in case of heavy rain, the people residing along with banks of Nullahs should be shifted to some safer places. Upon his arrival tight security arrangements were made by blocking all the roads leading towards Gawalmandi.

LAHORE: Punjab government has assured Lahore High Court that schedule for local bodies election will be announced before August 22. Additional advocate general Punjab on behalf of Punjab government during hearing of petitions filed by local council association and former Nazims against delay in local bodies elections made the assurance. The petitions stated that delay in local bodies elections is an open violation of constitution. The lawyer of government in today’s hearing informed the court that 17-member committee has been constituted for the arrangements of local bodies polls and date will be announced before next hearing.

Govt to send special plane for Pak students in Kyrgyzstan

ISLAMABAD: The body of Pakistani student Ali Raza slain in Kyrgyzstan handed to Pak embassy, could not reach Pakistan even after the lapse of three days, Geo News reported Monday. Talking to Geo News, Ali Raza’s father said his son has been studying electrical engineering and was due here after some months on completion of his education. He said he last talked to his son on phone the previous week, when he told that Muslims are being discriminated in the country. Ali’s father said it was yesterday night when Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi informed them that body of their son has been taken over by Pak Embassy in Kyrgyzstan and the arrangements are being made to take it back home and a special plane is being sent to the country for the purpose. The special plane will take back home also the other Pakistani students stranded there, Qureshi said according to Ali’s father. Meantime, the bereaved family of Ali is including his sister and mother are distraught with grief and mourning.

Zardari asks for party mobilization in relief work

ISLAMABAD: Co-Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party President Asif Ali Zardari has directed Party organizations and legislators in Sindh and Balochistan to mobilize the party workers for speeding up relief work in the wake of torrential rains in Karachi and other areas and also gear up for meeting any eventuality due to the approaching cyclone Phet that is likely to hit the country’s coastal areas later today. Low lying areas in Karachi have already submerged under water due to torrential rains and water supply to city from Hub pumping station is suspended as heavy downpour is forecast during the next 36 hours. Power supply to Thatta has also been cut off due to rains. A directive issued on Sunday by the party co-Chairman said that although the federal and provincial governments, the armed forces and relevant institutions of the state are already on the alert to meet any contingency, it was no less important that the Party workers were also mobilized to assist in the relief work and also rescue mission if the need arose. Spokesperson former Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the party co-Chairman directed that Party Senators, MNAs and MPAs particularly from Sindh and Balochistan must also be fully involved in the plans drawn by the Party organizations for the relief work and for meeting any eventuality due to cyclone Phet. The President further directed the provincial Party Presidents that they should be kept posted with the arrangements made by the Party in this regard. He also directed the Interior Ministry, which is monitoring cyclone through a special cell to keep him posted with the latest situation.

Ataabad lake water likely to enter spillway today

HUNZA: The distance between Ataabad lake water and spillway is down to less than four feet, Geo has reported from Hunza. Amid possibility of water outflow, Hunza authorities have closed Gilgit-Hunza section of Karkoram Highway for traffic. In addition, an IDP camp, which comprises of 400 tents, has being shifted to Special Education Complex after being declared dangerous. Hunza Nagar Deputy Commissioner Zafar Waqar Taj said that people have been advised to stay at high areas away from the river. Although a number of helicopters are already taking part in the rescue operation. However, in the wake of possible outflow of water, more helicopters will be used. The Hunza DC said that next 36 hours are very important in this regard. He hoped that the arrangements being made during the last four months to prevent human losses would bear fruits. Taj further said the current level in Ataabad Lake is 360 feet and its level is increasing by one inch after every hour.

Nawaz forms committee to help Hazara affectees

LAHORE: PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif has constituted a committee with the directives to oversee the arrangements being made to provide relief to the affected people of Hazara District. This he said while speaking to PML-N Gilgit Baltistan President Hafiz Hafeez ur Rehman on telephone. Nawaz said his party would not leave the affected persons alone at this difficult time and directed the PML-N workers to actively take part in relief efforts. The PML-N chief said he would also ask Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to dispatch relief goods for the displaced and affected people of Hazara.
