Kiwis halt Pakistan’s winning streak

PALLEKELE: New Zealand stopped Pakistan’s winning streak by giving them a shocking defeat of 110 runs in their key World Cup Group A match against Pakistan at the new Pallekele stadium on Tuesday. Pakistan batsmen, who were chasing for the first time in the tournament, could not go for runs against a huge target of 303 and were bundled out for 192 in 41.4 overs. Abdul Razzaq was the top scorer for Pakistan, hammering dashing 62 from 74 balls with nine fours batted. He was supported by Umar Akmal (38) and Umar Gul (34 not out). The openers failed again as both, Mohammad Hafeez (5) and Ahmed Shahzad (10) went back and then Younis Khan (nought) and Kamran Akmal (8) also departed and Pakistan were reeling at 23-4. Later, Pakistan’s most in-form batsman Misbah-ul-Haq resisted against the Kiwi attack for a while but he was also dismissed for seven when score reached 45. Then, captain Shahid Afridi displayed some aggression, hitting two fours and a six, but he was bowled by Jacob Oram for 17, made off nine balls. However, Umar Akmal and Abdul Razzaq provided some resistance and took the score to 100 before Umar getting out for 38. Earlier, Ross Taylor smashed a brilliant career-best hundred to lift New Zealand to an emphatic 302 for seven after captain Daniel Vettori won the toss. Taylor was given two 27th birthday gifts by wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal who dropped him on zero and eight off Shoaib Akhtar. Later, Taylor unleashed some of the most incredible slugging ever inflicted on an attack in a one-day international cricket match never mind the World Cup. He struck seven towering sixes and eight boundaries in his unbeaten knock of 131 scored off 124 balls for his fourth ODI hundred. Taylor made the most of his good fortune and ran riot in the 47th over of the innings, hitting paceman Akhtar for two boundaries and three sixes — 28 runs in all — to reach his first World Cup hundred off 117 deliveries. He then hit two boundaries and three sixes to take 30 off Abdul Razzaq’’s 49th over, helping New Zealand add 100 in the last five overs.

Ryder’s ton help Kiwis mount 311-7

AUCKLAND: Jessie Ryder hit form with a century as New Zealand posted 311, their highest score of the one-day series against Pakistan, batting first in the dead rubber at Eden Park in Auckland on Saturday. Ryder cracked six sixes and seven fours on his way to 107 off 93 balls for his second one-day century, while down the order Nathan McCullum with 65 and an unbeaten 58 from Scott Styris helped bolster the New Zealand total. After being put in to bat, New Zealand produced their most impressive innings of the six-match series, and Ryder’’s performance was the best individual score, although too late to make a difference to the series outcome. Pakistan took an unbeatable 3-1 lead when they trounced New Zealand by 41 runs in the fifth game in Hamilton on Thursday. The second game was washed out. With nothing at stake but pride, New Zealand ditched the experiment of batting Brendon McCullum down the order, which had not paid off in the earlier matches, and restored the swashbuckling batter to his opener’’s role. But he only made 12 before being outsmarted by Sohail Tanvir, who fired down a ball slightly wider than usual. McCullum’’s attempt to pull it over mid off resulted in him getting an edge off the toe of the bat to wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal. Enter Ryder to join Martin Guptill and New Zealand took charge bringing up their 100 with a Ryder six in the 15th over and putting on 123 for the second wicket. Guptill, as he has done throughout the series, made a sound start before throwing his wicket away with a rash shot. He reached 44 when he tried to hit Abdul Razzaq out of the ground and was caught by Umar Gul at long on to start a New Zealand slide that saw them slump from 141-1 to 190-5 in 11 overs. Ryder, who required a runner in the latter part of his innings, saw his innings come to an end when he skied part-time spinner Mohammad Hafeez and was caught at deep midwicket by Tanvir. Styris and Nathan McCullum picked up the pace for New Zealand in the closing overs as they produced a 120-run stand for the sixth wicket in 14 overs. Abdul Razzaq was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers with 2-23 off seven overs, while Hafeez, who was surprisingly called upon to bowl at the end, took 2-57 off nine overs.

Pakistan beat NZ, win first series in two years

AUCKLAND: Pakistan won their first one-day series since November 2008 when they beat New Zealand by 41 runs in the fifth game of their six-match series at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Thursday. The victory, courtesy of Ahmed Shehzad’’s 115 and a polished bowling performance gave Pakistan an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series, with only the final match to be played at Eden Park in Auckland on Saturday. Pakistan made a below-par 268 for nine, but New Zealand wasted a golden opportunity to level the series with only Martin Guptill (65) and stand-in captain Ross Taylor (69) posting any scores of substance in their 227 all out in 46.5 overs. The hosts had looked well set to push for victory when Taylor was batting with James Franklin in the 42nd over, but when Taylor, who had survived a confident leg before appeal by Shahid Afridi, was given out in the same over their run chase disappeared. New Zealand have now lost 14 of their last 15 completed one-day internationals. Pakistan’’s innings had been anchored by Shehzad’’s first one-day international century, which he brought up with a push to square leg after he wandered across his stumps to well outside off to give himself some room. His century came off 101 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes, and the 19-year-old looked to increase the scoring rate even further once he reached the milestone but was caught in the deep by Franklin off Scott Styris in the 38th over. The visitors had looked well set to push on to 300-plus on a good pitch with short boundaries and while several batsmen got starts, New Zealand’’s bowlers varied their pace and length to restrict the scoring in the final few overs.
